You are interested in the world around you, want a variety of activities for you and your children, and are proud of your choice of at-home mothering for your families! We know, because we're at-home mothers, too! You need a group that understands your special needs as an at-home mother and we're it!

Who Can Join?

The MOMS Club is for stay-at-home moms. If you are home during the day with your kids, please consider joining us. If you work part-time or you home school, you can join too!

Our local chapter is open to those MOMS living in the Maynardville, Corryton, Sharps Chapel, Plainview and Luttrell areas of Tennessee. That means we serve the following zip codes: 37807, 37779, 37866 and 37721.

Meetings and Activities

We meet every first Wednesday of the month for our monthly business meeting. The meetings begin at 10am and are more than child friendly. At this meeting we discuss future activities and other club business. We have speakers from the community and open discussions, along with activities for the children. And we always have a good time!

In addition to our monthly meeting, we have scheduled activities two or three days a week. We visit local farms and businesses, play at local parks, meet for cooking club and scrapbooking, and we even take one night out just for the moms! We would love for you to join us and become a member of our chapter.

Goals and Principles

Goals:
* To provide a support group for mothers who choose to stay at home to raise their children
* To provide a forum for topics of interest to mothers
* To help children in the community
* To perform at least one service project yearly helping needy children

Principles:
* That women must be free to choose their personal path to fulfillment
* That, for women who choose it, raising children is an important and fulfilling full-time job
* That a family's decision for a mother to stay at home to raise the children often involves considerable financial sacrifice.
* That there is no one right way to raise children, but our members have a common concern in raising their children in a healthful way

MOMS Club History

The MOMS Club began in 1983 when Mary James, an at-home mother in California, decided she was tired of being alone at home. She wanted to meet other at-home mothers and she wanted to find other at-home children for her children to play with. When she discovered there were no other organizations that met during the day and allowed her to come with her baby and preschooler, she decided to start a brand new organization just for at-home mothers, and the MOMS Club was born.The chapter she started was so successful, she knew mothers in other areas must be needing the MOMS Club, too. Soon she and other volunteers were helping mothers start MOMS Clubs across the country and around the world! We now have 2,000+ chapters in the US alone and over 100,000 members! We also have International chapters starting too!

KIDS Book Review

Kindergarten-Grade 3 - There's a whole slew of edibles that D.W. finds disgusting, but spinach is at the top of her list. Dining out with her family, she causes a scene when her parents suggest that she give her salad greens a try-no more restaurants for the picky little aardvark after that. Staying home with a sitter is boring, though, so when she hears about her grandmother's birthday dinner at a fancy restaurant, she wants to come, too. She orders the Little Bo Peep Pot Pie, devours it with relish, amazing everybody, including herself, and learns a lessons. The text is spare and funny, and while all the colored-pencil illustrations reflect Brown's sense of humor and familiarity with the little details of childhood, some are downright hilarious. Charming endpapers feature some of the foods D.W. loves to hate. Although she wears an expression of pure horror when she discovers the main ingredient of her pie, readers will suspect that she'll keep that delicious spinach down and her mind and mouth open to new eating possibilities in the future. Youngsters are sure to relate to the young heroine, laugh at her, and maybe even laugh at themselves. Brown knows what appeals to children, and he serves up a generous portion.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

The title may seem a bit funny, but this book is one of my new favorites.

Juliet -- a 33-year-old successful British author -- receives a letter from a man on the island of Guernsey shortly after World War II. He has read a book of hers and would like more information. They begin writing back and forth and soon many residents of Guernsey are corresponding with Juliet as well.

Amazingly, this entire book is told through letters. They are letters between Juliet and her best friend, her publisher, her American suitor, and the many interesting people of Guernsey. In many ways, you learn much more about each character through his or her own thoughts and words than you could through any narrator's description. And each character is affected positively by the relationships they share with Juliet and each other. You can't get through this book without finding someone you'd like to be friends with.

Although this book does give a taste of what the War was like for the various characters, it does not dwell too long on the various atrocities, and it is told from a sympathetic and balanced viewpoint. Above all things, this book is a story about people and the relationships they forge with one another. It is emotional, inspirational, and entertaining. By the end, you feel that you know the characters well and can picture their homes. You might just want to move to Guernsey and join them.

When I reached the end, I started to reread it immediately because I didn't want my time with the characters to end. But alas, I did return it to the Maynardville Library. So now it is your turn to read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I hope you like it as much as I did.
